DISCOVERY
Grades 5-7
“A new world to discover - New directions to explore”
Duration: 3-4 days
The Discovery Program is an immersive outdoor education experience designed to support students as they navigate the personal, social, and environmental challenges of our changing world. Through experiential learning, nature connection, reflection, team-building, and adventure-based activities, students develop a “New Compass” that helps guide their growth, resilience, confidence, and sense of purpose.
The cardinal directions of the Discovery Compass are Nature, Sustainability, Ethics and Good Work.
Students explore these guiding themes through immersive outdoor education activities including field games, team-building initiatives, interpretive hikes, environmental workshops, ocean exploration, forest-based learning, group discussion, and campfire gatherings.
During this program students will:
Build community and strengthen relationships with classmates
Participate in wilderness skills and critical thinking workshops
Paddle traditional big canoes
Experience quiet reflection and solo time in the forest
Play collaborative forest games
Explore coastal ecosystems and discover marine life up close
Develop confidence, curiosity, resilience, and leadership skills
Learn practical ways to support more sustainable and connected communities
Through experiential learning and nature connection, students begin to use their “New Compass” as a framework for navigating challenges, making meaningful choices, and deepening their relationship with themselves, others, and the natural world.
The Discovery Compass and its interconnected directions offer students a new way of seeing the world: one that encourages groundedness, authenticity, empathy, and care for community and the Earth.
