A Fircom Love Story by Katie Sandusky

I had the pleasure of growing up in the 80s and 90s at Fircom every summer. I went from being a kid at kids camp to a leader at moms and kids camp, and even a hand washing dish pitter all summer long in my teens!

Growing up at Fircom taught me so much about hard work, resilience, friendship and fun!

A few of my camper memories include hiking all day on our 2-day out trips to row boating around Fircom waters with all our supplies in 1992 against all the winds!! Finally resting under a tarp in the forest where we awoke all covered in slugs with slime all over our sleeping bags.  A special memory was of sleeping on the rocks under the stars on a clear night as the waves crashed around.

A few years after my son was born I found out that Fircom had reopened. I was so thrilled to be able to bring him to one of my happy places, and to enjoy a moms and kids camp, then to volunteer at moms and kids for a few years after.

The memories I have enjoying my summers at Fircom have stayed with me for years! I am so thankful I was able to continue make lasting memories with my son at Fircom.

I am also grateful that in 2017 my son Ben was able to make his own happy memories when he was old enough to go to kids camp on his own.

Additionally, my son and my sister and I enjoyed a late winter/early spring getaway last March to Fircom and stayed in the cozy Farmhouse.  My sister had been a camper at Fircom in her pre-teen years as well. It has been 30+ yrs since she’d been back on the island and she thoroughly enjoyed wandering around camp and seeing all the updates.

Fircom is truly the best place for kids to grow up!

Kind regards,

Katie Sandusky
